Which of the following most accurately describes the problem?

T"production of an oil-engined 4tonner weighing only 37i. cwt. unladen is a feat which Arran Motors, Ltd., Welwyn Garden City, Herts, has achieved in a recently introduced model. The power unit is of the Perkins • Leopard type, developing 60 b.h.p. at 2,400 r.p.m. It is rated at 24.8 h.p., the bore and stroke being 100 mm. and 327 mm. respectively.

The Leopard engine is of the highcamshaft pattern and, complete with flywheel ,and electrical equipment, weighs only 772 lb. The power is transmitted from the engine through a Borg and Beck single-plate clutch, a four-speed gearbox, and a two-piece propeller shaft, equipped with HardySpicer needle-type universal joints. A self-aligning steady bearing is provided at the centre.

The bevel-driven rear-axle incorporates fully floating shafts and adjustable tapered-roller bearings. In forwardcontrol form the chassis costs £598 and in normal-control guise is priced at £588.

Another new Arran model is a fourwheeler designed to carry a pay-load of about 7i tons. In this case, a Gard

ner four-cylindered oil engine is employed, which, with a bore of 4Lins. and a stroke of 6 ins., develops 63 b.h.p. at 1,550 r.p.m. The overheadworm rear axle has a ratio of 6.25 to 1. Lockheed hydraulic servo brakes operate on all four wheels, the latter carrying 36-in. by 8-in. tyres.

For operators who require a body length of 15 ft., there is a model available with a wheelbase of 12 ft. 3 ins., whilst on the long-wheelbase model a body 17 ft. long may be mounted. The machine weighs under 4 tons unladen and the chassis price is £990.
