Which of the following most accurately describes the problem?

rONSTRUCTED on the rocking-bar principle, but drawn by a vehicle with practieally. a normal body, a new seinitrailer: has been ptoduced by Southern, North and Barker, Ltd., Brighouse. It is designed to combine the utility of the semi-trailer with the capacity of the double vehicle. It has a substantial carrying capacity and can be uncoupled to take a half-Ioad, when necessary.

The unit inspected by a representative of The Commercial Motor was for work in conjunction with a Commer forward-Control 'vehicle, but attachments will be constructed for all models. A Commer.back axle and suspension. unit" is incorporated, and all the fittings, including those of the brakes, are interchangeable with those of the tractor vehicle.

A 2-ft. ttirntable, with a boss to---take the stress, is fitted to the tractor chassis, which carries ordinary bodyvi-Ork, except for a reduction of the length by 2 ft. 2 ins, to allow for the turntable mounting. When in use without the trailer, an extra loading board, ordinarily carried behind the tailboard, can be dropped over the turntable, so that, in normal operation, the space is not wasted. Coupling or uncoupling .occupies considerably less than a minute.

Built to carry loads up to 4 tons, the semi-trailer illustrated has a width of 6 ft.6 ins, and an overall outside length of 16 ft. The drop sides are 11 ft. long, the front end narrowing off and finishing in a tool-box and turntable.. pin casing.

Four girders, 8 ins, by 1 in. on the outside and 3 ins. by 2 ins, inside, and with 11-in. angle cross-rods, are used in the welded frame, which has a bow front to carry the

turntable facing. Other frame members are bolted up and the main girders are wood-lagged. A robustly made jockey wheel and jack are carried at the forward end.

Powerful brakes are operated by a connection to the handlever in the cab. This coupling and the lighting link are quickly locked or unlocked and, when not in use, remain attached in a safe position. An independent hand brake for parking purposes is fixed on the trailer.

For special loads, chassis of particularly strong construction are being designed. An alternative pattern of bodywork at the forward end of the semi-trailer is also available.
