rOMPLAINT of a lack of facilities at
Truro and other markets for washing lorries bringing in livestock was made at a meeting of the MidCornwall section of the Associated Road Operators, at St. Austell, with Mr. W. R. G. Hawke in the chair. Criticism 'was made also of the Transport
-,:under which,-it ;:waS—stated, the washing of .velnOtes, was compulsory on
hauliers, but. not; on farmers: • : It . was resolved to apply to the Ministry of Agriculture for the revision of the Regulations, to bring farmers into line with hauliers; for the provision of better washing facilities at Cornish markets; and for the drawing up of a new regulation whereby pigs of 40-50 lb. in weight could be lifted from vehicles, instead of being "run down the ramp," which was a compulsory practice. Mr. Skynner, chairman of the Western Express Haulage Co., St. Austell, said that hauliers' costs had increased tremendously during the past
two years. If their prices were not increased when costs rose, they would not be able to 'decrease them—as they would be expected to do—when costs fell: The rates of their " neighbours " in.Peiazaiioe and Falmouth were, although ;mit excessive, considerably higher' than those of hauliers in MidCornwall.
• Mr. Humphrey Cooke (St. Austell), secretary for the Devon and Cornwall , area of the Association, who .was supported by Mr. R. W. Fennamore (Plymouth), secretary of the Mid-Cornwall sub-area, spoke on the work of the observance committee set up by the Devon and Cornwall Joint Conciliation Board, which, it was stated, was functioning successfully.
