Which of the following most accurately describes the problem?

A LTHOUGH, in the main, the pro1-1 gramme of E. R. Foden and Son (E.R.F., Ltd.), Sun Works, Sandbach, continues without material alteration, so far as the larger vehicles are concerned, we are able to describe an entirely new 4-tonner and a number of modifications to the 7i-ton chassis.

The new 4-tanner replaces the 0.E.3type and, whilst the original model had a Gardner 3 L.W. • oil engine, the new model has the recently introduced Gardner L.K.-model four-cylindered 22.5 h.p. engine.

The chassis frame is a particularly substantial structure, cross-braced at. all important points and equipped with wide-angled gussets to avoid local stressing. The side channels are the usual steel pressings, 8 ins, deep, and, in the main, parallel. At the front, a dished pressing, which carries the forward mounting of the engine,is tlitched into the webs and flanges of the side-members; at the rear of the unit there is another channel-sectioned member with a central depression to howe the rubber trunnion mounting at the rear of the gearbox.

Between the front eyes of the rear springs is an exceedingly stiff tie, made tip 'of a deep channel looped in the cM centre, whero the propeller shaft oscillates.

The Gardner L.K. engine is built unitwise with the clutch and gearbox, the whole being mounted. in the frame through the medium of a rubberized trunnion at the front and at the rear. Torque reaction is taken care of by a pair of Fioatex bushes on the frame.

The single-plate clutch has a light action and a relatively large friction surface. All the gear clusters are made from nickel case-hardened steel, the teeth being ground after hardening. An open propeller shaft with needleroller universal joints connects to the overhead worm of the rear axle. The standard reduction ratio is 6.5 to 1, which, with 32-in. by 6-in. tyres, and a governed engine speed of 2,000 r.p.m., allows amaximum speed on top gear of 31 m.p.h.; on third gear, 17 m.p.h. ; on "second," 10 m.p.h., and on "first," 5 m.p.h.

The four-wheel brakes arc operated through a Lockheed hydraulic system with Dewandre assistance. At the rear, external brake cylinders are used, but at the front the cylinders are located inside the drums, all of which

are 16 ins, in diameter. The front shoes are 2i ins, wide, whilst those at the rear are 4f ins, wide, the greater width being due to the fact that the hand brake operates the same shoes as are applied by the pedal.

The 0.E.4 chassis is available in three wheelbase lengths, that of the short model being 11 ft. and of the long type 12 ft. 6 ins. The wheelbase of the tipper is 8 ft. 6 ins. The front and rear wheel tracks are 5 ft. 6 ins. and 5 ft. respectively; the laden frame height is, in all cases, 2 ft. 1 in. The height with a flat platform is 3 ft. 3 ins. when mounted on the normal chassis and 3 ft. 71 ins, on the tipper. The weight of the short-wheelbase model, lsith a standard body and cab, is estimated at just under 21 tons.

New Points in the 71-tonner.

The new features of the 7-tonner concern principally the transmission for the new D.B.S. single-plate clutch and four-speed gearbox. The clutch has special multiplying levers, which oscillate on ball pivots. The ball thrust race does not rotate except when actually withdrawing the clutch; furthermore, provision is made for lubrication of the whole mechanism from a fixed extension carrying a grease nipple.

This model will be shown at Olympia with a greatly improved streamlined cab. The roof line is continued to the front dumbirons in a continuous sweep. Quarter lights give increased visibility for the driver and the door windows are arranged to drop. The model ,which will be on view at Olympia will have a sliding roof, but this is not a standard fitment and the vehicle, in consequence, costs slightly more than the normal price.

Complete with drop-sides and tailboard, -streamlined cab and all equipment,. the price of the • 13-ft. 8-in. wheelbase model is £1,075. Similarly equipped, the O.E.4 model costs £895 for the 11-ft.-wheelbase lorry rand-£.900 for the 12-ft. 6-in. type.
