Which of the following most accurately describes the problem?

TIIAT a great city like Manchester should only parade 64 machines at its seventh annual motor parade organized by the local division of the Commercial Motor Users Association can hardly be considered satisfactory. The Manchester parade is the last this year of the Lancashire parades. The number of vehicles entered was hardly so good as that of previous years, the analysis of entries being as follows :Steam wagons: 14 Fodens, 5 Sentinels. Steam tractors: 2 Fowlers. Petrol machines : 11 Karriers, 10 Thornycrofts, 8 Dennises, 6 Albions, 2 Leylands and 1 each of Shefflex, Guy, Austin, Morris, Fiat and Ford makes. The two oldest vehicles on parade were a 1904 Foden steam wagon owned by 3. T. Lawton, Ltd., and a 1907 Austin in the service of Simpson and Godlee, Ltd., the latter being a prize-winner.

Ten fleets, each of three vehicles, were entered for the petrol team challenge cup. which trophy was won by Thornycrofts owned by Wilson's Brewery, Ltd.

As regards the steam section there were only four competing fleets, and Fodens won the chief award.

The Manchester parade always has a B26

strong section for light petrol lorries and vans, that is, vehicles with a capacity of under three tons. Twelve machines participated and two of the three prizes were taken by Simpson and Godlee, Ltd., which at previous parades figured prominently in the awards.

Mr. T. Boyle (Co-operative Wholesale Society, Ltd.), speaking at the luncheon to the judges and other parade officials, referred to the useful work that was being done by the C.M.U.A., particularly by its agitation for bridges over canals and railways which arei adequate to cope with modern traffic needs.

Mr. F. G. Bristovii said at the next meeting of the National Council consideration would be given to the future of motor parades with a view to increasing their efficiency.
