COMMERCIAL VEHICLE AUCTIONS Anybody who doubts that badges still matter should speak to Chris Wright, managing director of Commercial Vehicle Auctions (CVA) of Doncaster. Ile recently sold a 1997 Seddon Atkinson Strata 17.380M 4x2 high-roof sleeper-cab tractor unit on air for a disappointing 111,000. An ERF EC11 380 4x2 tractor of the same vintage, with an Olympic sleeper cab. on air, with exactly the same driveline and Cummins M11 380hp engine, was knocked down for 1,26,200 on the same day, he reveals. "They were identical apart from the cabs," he says.

As if to stress the topsy-turvy nature of the industry, a 10month-old Scania R124 360 tractor was sold by CVA for 11.800 more than new ones are fetching, says Wright (pictured below). And Volvo FHs have perked up, he adds. He disposed of a pair of 1996 Volvo FH12-420 XL 6x2s with 14-speed gearboxes, Globetrotter cabs, CD trims, both Pregistered, for 142,000 apiece.

At the lighter end of the scale, he's sold a Mitsubishi Canter 3.5-tonner dropside-1998 on an 6-plate, on 11,000km—for 19.500. "There were four or five bidders after it. Interestingly, there were three Volvo dealers at the sale, but none of them had a go," says Wright. Volvo distributes Canters in the UK.
