• A Monopolies and Mergers Commission probe into the servicing of gas analysers has cleared manufacturers of restrictive practices.
But MMC officials did concede that "certain practices are employed by exhaust gas analyser suppliers which make it difficult for independent operators to service or calibrate the equipment."
The investigation was sparked off by complaints that producers were preventing independent companies servicing and calibrating their machines: the market is dominated by VL Churchill, FKI Crypton, FKI Transervice, Lucas Service, Sun Electric and H Young.
The analysers are used during the MoT test on vehicles under 3.5 tonnes.
