Which of the following most accurately describes the problem?

by Steve McQueen • A team of purchasing managers under a director of procurement will lead a move to reduce the number of suppliers to NFC's combined Logistics and BRS operation, UK Transport and Logistics.

Interviews were held last week and appointments will be made soon.

Vehicle parts suppliers will bear the brunt of the slimming exercise with each purchasing manager responsible for specific buying activities and the identification of a national supplier list.

BRS's aftermarket needs, for example, are currently sourced from up to 9,000 engineering suppliers. The target is for only 1,000 by 1995, mostly by axing one-off suppliers: factors with a national distribution network are expected to benefit.

At present 16,000 suppliers provide BRS with everything from staples to trucks. The overall target is nearer 3.000 and the same approach will be adopted across the board by the enlarged division.

Some local parts factors will continue to play a supplying role for geographical reasons.
