THE PRACTICE of stacking steel coils in an upright position on flat-bedded lorries, and putting blocks of wood each side was completely unsatisfactory, said an MP last week.
The Transport Minister should consider introducing regulations so that a proper purpose-built cradle was used. John Ellis (Labour, Brigg and Scunthorpe).
Transport Under Secretary John Horam told him that this was not a particularly serious cause of accidents. The D partment believed that if ti instructions laid down in ti regulations were followo there should be no problem.
He knew that there h; been one or two accidents Mr Ellis's area.
