Accommodation for 28 Vehicles at Sheerness ANEW coach station was opened at ' Sheerness, last Friday, to meet the growing demand for improved facilities in connection with passenger transport in the Isle of Sheppey. The station has been built for the Maidstone and District Motor Services, Ltd., which, we understand, is the only bus company operating on the island.
Since the removal of the tolls payable at the bridge over the River Swale, Sheppey has considerably increased hi popularity, and the demand for transPort on the island and to places on the mainland has correspondingly enlarged.
The station consists of an attractive building accommodating a booking and waiting room, a luggage office, a rest room for drivers and conductors, and departments for the inspector and local superintendent, with a large park at the back for 28 vehicles. A covered platform runs around the premises, and three buses can be loaded at once. It is interesting to note that the paving was carried out by E. T. Elgood, Ltd.,
428, 01d Kent Road, London, S.E.1, which claims that the material used is non-slip, oil and water-resisting, will not crack and gives long service. The company has paved the London Coastal Station, at Victoria, and others.
At present, the station at Sheerness is dealing, on an average with 273 departures a day, and, during the summer that figure will be more than doubled. The station is used both by local buses and long-distance coaches run by the Maidstone and District concern, and it is the third of its type to be built for the company, the other two being at Maidstone and Gillingham. Careful attention is paid to the public comfort.
The opening ceremony was performed by Councillor W. F. Hounsell, J.P., chairman of Sheerness Urban District Council, and the following important officials of Maidstone and District Motor Services, Ltd., were present :—Col. H. I. Robinson (chairman), Messrs. G. E. French (managing director), T. W. Marsh (traffic superintendent), EL 0. Hollis (chief engineer) and R. Grimer (district superintendent). Mr. Grimer was formerly proprietor of Enterprise Motor Services, a Sheppey independent concern that was merged with the Maidstone undertaking.
