Which of the following most accurately describes the problem?

• Diesel engines will continue to be the first choice in British trucks well into the next century, according to a top engineering design firm.

Ricardo's Giles Hundleby says diesel rather than alternative fuel will power most engines, although environmental imperatives are likely to mean a fuel efficiency penalty.

He says that Euro3 NOx levels can be reached by retarding the timing on diesels, but this increases particulates and worsens fuel consumption by 10-12%. The favoured option is to introduce exhaust gas recirculation (EGR) on heavy diesels, but the current "13 mode" EC emissions test cycle for heavy vehicle engines concentrates on full-load operation, which causes problems. Variable turbocharger geometry and electronic control will overcome these problems, says Hundleby, but they may still harm fuel consumption.
