Which of the following most accurately describes the problem?

• The seven former senior employees of NFC subsidiary Fleetcare who face charges of fraud and conspiracy have all pleaded not guilty at the start of their trial at Southwark Crown Court this week.

The charges all relate to allegations that Fleetcare overcharged the British Railways Board for maintenance on its 7,000-strong fleet of vehicles.

The defendants are accused of defrauding British Rail by submitting false invoices for parts and labour; dishonestly obtaining money, cheques and credit; making false entries on job cards, and dishonestly overcharging British Rail between 1 October 1982 and 31 January 1984.

NFC says it will not pay all defence costs (expected to run into millions of pounds), but confirms that it will be giving the defendants — senior managers and directors John Flay, Philip Ward, Donald Williams, Barry Munt, Brian Foanes, David Smith and Cohn Smith — its support "by providing financial assistance towbrds their costs".
