According to John Silbermann, chairman of the Road Haulage Association, one of the effects of inflation is that bankers hold ''an ever-growing share of the ownership of the lorries seen on our roads." Speaking at the Association's annual dinner in London on May 8 — the largest ever held, with more than 1,300 guests — he wondered whether bankers really wanted their investments to be managed by hauliers.
If I thought hauliers had their hands on any of my money I would close my bank account faster than the speed of Concorde.
