Filter BlockageHE value of an efficient lubricating

]. oil filtering system is -often wasted by the operator continuingto run a vehicle after the •-filter has become blocked, and a devicewhich shows that the element is clogged has obvious advantages.

This was pointed out to G. A. Firkins, Ltd., Stoke Heath, Bromsgrove, by a well-known engine maker, and a modified form of by-pass was developed by the concern to show when the valve wits operating. -If oil continues to be by-passed when. theengine is operating at a normal working temperature, the heed for filter cleaning is indicated.

A conventional spring-loaded valve having a stem that extends through a synthetic-rubber seal in the retaining cap, is used. When oil is being bypassed the stem moves outwards and gives a visual indication that the valve is in operation. The cap could be fitted with an electrical contact switch actuating a warning device in the cab.

Contamination by sludge from a filter sump is avoided by locating the valve above the main chamber. All the filters of the Firkins Firtop range are now available with attachment flanges to British Standards specifications.

An important feature of the filters is the use for the elements of porous sintered metal. having a guaranteed pore size, which provides a large filtering capacity with a small bulk. The original elements have an indefinitely long life, cleaning being performed by back-flushing with a solvent. The cases and filter heads are of light alloy.
