DROPOSALS by a motor taxation I inquiry committee regarding the rationalization of motor taxation have been accepted by the Transport Advisory Council of India, which recommends their early implementation.

The committee laid down principles to govern the control of inland transport. Control should be by fair and impartial regulation, and safe, adequate, economical and efficient services should be promoted. Reasonable charges for transport should be established and maintained without undue discrimination. Co-ordination should be developed and an adequate nation-wide system preserved.

Addressing the council, Mr. G. L. Mehta, a member of the Planning Commission, said that the Commission was examining plans for the revision of roads and road transport in the various States. It was essential that vehicle types be standardized, so that operating costs could be reduced and the development of the motor industry could be co-ordinated.

Mr. K. Santhanam, Minister of State for Transport and Railways, emphasized the need for amending the Motor Vehicles Act to speed up the nationalization of road transport, Many States had embarked upon some kind of State enterprise in road transport.

The Pakistan Government has decided to nationalize road transport in Karachi and details of a scheme are being worked out.

REGISTRATIONS RISE

A 1 14,602, registrations of new /-ivehicles for March, excluding cars and motorcycles, showed a rise as compared with those for February (11,971). The main increases were: Hackneys, 894 (615). and" other goods vehicles" 8,126 (6,396),
