The Authorities Decide to Abolish Street Stands and to Divert Vehicles to a Municipal Parking Ground, 0 INCE -Wrexham Council has forbid)0 den motorbuses and hackney carriages to use street stands and has diverted them to the municipal parking ground, much feeling has been aroused, not only amongst vehicle owners, but also local shopkeepers. The corporation has purchased a parking ground, which has been developed at a cost of several thousand 'pounds.
Wrexham is visited by Many people who travel by motorbus from a big rural area and, on certain days of the week, there is considerable congestion on the vehicle stands. These' stands in side streets abut on the main thoroughfares, and were allocated by the local authority according to the district served.
The proposed transference of this traffic from side streets has aroused objection from the shopkeepers in the main streets, their fear being that, notwithstanding the fact that the new parking ground is within two or throe hundred yards of the heart of the town, they might lose business. The council, however, has proceeded with the municipal parking scheme, believing that in thia1 direction lies a solution of the traffic problem.
The Watch Committee of the Town Council thereupon decided to abolish, as from May 1st, all omnibus and hackney stands in. High Street, Queen's Street, Library Square, Argyle Street, Egerton Street, and Lord Street. This decision giires the buses and the ears now using the stands no option but to take up their allotted ranks on the King Street parking ground. The council intends to make a quarterly charge according to seating capacity in respect of each vehicle using the ground, but, for the present, no charge will be made.
The Wrexham and District Transport Co.'s buses will continue to use the Guildhall Square stand in connection with certain of their routes, as their tenancy of the site, which they hold from the Town Council, does not expire until the termination of the present year.
About 20 of the motor-hackney ownerdrivers affected by the Wrexham Town Council's abolition of certain stands in the town have entered a protest against the decision, and the Mayor has promised to bring the matter before the council.
