Although Bolivia has the lowest density of population of allthe countries of South America, motor lorries are, according to a recently issued Department of Overseas Trade report, being used in increasing numbers for the transport of minerals from the various mines to railhead and other points where the nature of the ground permits motor vehicles to run. All the mineral districts are (730
mountainous, and the principal towns and the main part of the population are to be found at a height of just over 12,000 ft. above sea level. The various types of motor vehicle, therefore, that are employed have to work under extremely arduous conditions, and precipitous gradients have to benegotiated. We have reason to believe that some British vehicles are at work in the
country and that they are giving a good account of themselves.
In considering the prospects for the extended employment of motor vehicles in this country it must be borne in mind that in the rainy season, from December to April, when the downfall is very heavy, the roads become bad and often dangerous or even impassable for motor traffic.
