As the used market continues to climb for the fourth year running, we ask the SMMT what's hot and what's not...

The trade in used heavy commercial vehicles rose for the fourth year running according to annual figures published by the Society of Motor Manufacturers and Traders.

Last year saw 77.864 units registered.sold or exchanged, a rise of 5.8% on 2002(73,583). The buying pattern shows more activity in the first and second quarter (41,356 units),with July to September slowing down to 19,588 and the last three months of the year proving the quietest with 16,920.

While the figures represent all transactions and exchanges, the signs are good in the used market despite all the external events threatening sales a year ago; the Iraq war, unstable oil prices, a shaky economy. and more foreign trucks coming into the UK offering cheaper rates to customers forcing UK set-ups out of business.

The two-axle sector accounts for 63.6% (49,530 units) of the HGV marketplace, but just 7,107 vehicles are three years old or under. The most trade is done in vehicles over 10 years old, 19,787; while seven to 10year-old vehicles make up 11,816 of the trade; and the four to six-year age range is 10,820 units.

Tractors are the next biggest sector with 25% (19.463 units) of the used trade. With manufacturers starting to do away with three-year contract hire deals and exports increasing for younger vehicles, the four to six-year sector will be the most competitive in the future. Already it does the most business with 8,104 units.

Three and four-axle rigids make up the numbers, totalling 8,102 units. But here demand from trade is aggressive for good examples:The most buoyant models in this area are seven to 10-year-old models.

1veco is the most popular brand with 17,451 units, or 22.4% of the marketplace, followed by Daf with 13,662 vehicles, representing 17.5% of all used HGV movement. Claiming bronze is Mercedes-Benz with 8,712 units. •
