Temperature recorders became mandatory in 1994 on vehicles used in the primary distribution of quick-frozen food (defined as movements from cold store to cold store, but excluding temporary cold stores at the point of sale). The pressure to fit temperature monitoring equipment was given another boost in 1995. when the Food Safety (Temperature Control) Act became law. It stipulates a maximum storage and transport temperature of +8'C for chilled food. It does not demand operators fit air temperature monitors on their vehicles, but it does require them to measure the air temperature at regular intervals and to keep records. This can theoretically be done manually but many operators have chosen to fit automatic temperature recorders.
