ANOWNER-DRIVER has told a disciplinary inquiry he does not believe in speed limiters as they cause accidents by "sending drivers to sleep".

Bolton-based Alan Macardy, trading as Macardy's Transport, who holds a two-vehicle licence, had been called before the North WestemTraffic Commissioner Beverley Bell at Summary a St Helens disciplinary inquiry. He had kept no maintenance records and ran his vehicle with a defective speed limiter.

The TC responded by suspending his 0-licence and HGV driving licence for a weekend. Macardy also undertook to attend an operator's seminar to ensure he understood the licensing requirements.

Macardy told the inquiry he had now complied with all the vehicle examiner's instructions including forward planning and contracting maintenance out to two garages Previously maintenance had been carried out by a mechanic at weekends and no records were kept. The inq. queried the lack of eight-weekly maintenance inspections, but Macu replied that he had misunderstood, presuming that it was every e working weeks, and did not include holiday perioc Macardy had convictions for three offences of tu a vehicle with a defective speed limiter. He admii that the speed limiter had been defective for sc time. The Traffic Commissioner said she disappro of defective speed limiters on grounds of fair conic tion and road safety, In response Macardy asserted that limiters were in the interests of road safety, because they caused cidents by sending drivers to sleep.

Suspending the licences after Macardy undert( to attend an operator's seminar, the TC said she that he now understood what was required.
