A HAULAGE boss and one of his drivers have been jailed for a total of nine years for attempting to smuggle flm worth of tobacco, destined for Glasgow, through Dover port.
Maidstone Crown Court heard how Customs had uncovered the tobacco, along with 155,000 cigarettes. concealed in a truck carrying a load of mineral water in August 2001.
Operator James Carmlyle Brown of East Kilbride who ran Glasgow-based JCB Express was found guilty of conspiracy to evade duty andVAT of around £1.im. He was jailed for five years. His driver Douglas McBurney of Glasgow, who drove the vehicle, was found guilty of the same charges and sentenced to four years.
Peter McGee, Customs head of investigation says: "Customs officers have stopped more than Ulm worth of tobacco hitting our streets,which would have deprived public services of cash and meant unfair competition for legitimate Scottish shopkeepers."
• Richard Davidson of Collindule and Anthony Clark of Clactonon-Sea have been .jailed for a total of 24 years after Dover Customs discovered 3kg of cocaine in the tractor's air filter housing last September.
