• Delivery drivers in Cornwall are being paid as little as 1160 a week, according to one firm which has defended its local paper advertisement offering 2,260 a week after training.

South West Delivery Services, based in Bodmin and Truro, received 150 applicants for a few delivery driver jobs, despite offering a starting salary of £140 a week for a fourday week rising to £260 a week after a short training period. Mark Adams of South West Delivery Services says his wages "are not low for the area". He claims his drivers have told him that he pays quite well compared with other Cornish firms. Some drivers, he says, are being paid no more than £160 a week.

Mike Thomas, of Cambornebased MFJ Thomas, is disgusted with the rates of pay. is it any wonder the whole country is short of skilled drivers?"
