It is with great sadness that I have to report the death of Tim Inman following a short illness. After a distinguished army career, during which he rose to the rank of Colonel in the Royal Electrical and Mechanical Engineers (REME), Inman joined the Road Haulage Association as technical manager. His many talents were quickly recognised and he was soon made director of operations, a role which he relished and made his own.
During his time at the Association, Tim was instrumental in introducing many key RHA policies, while at the same time earning the respect of operators and staff alike — and making many lasting friends.
Someone once said that he was the best director-general the RHA never had.
A natural leader of men and a consummate professional, Inman was also a charming man with a keen sense of humour and he was that rare thing, a true gentleman.
An avid sportsman, who had represented the army, Tim continued to ski and play squash long after most would have hung up their skis and racquets. Indeed, just a few short weeks before his death, he could be found snorkelling in the Indian Ocean.
On his retirement from the RHA, rather than opting for a quiet life, Inman embarked on his third successful career, taking on the role of chief executive of the Association of British Certification Bodies (ABCB).
Again Inman's managerial and organisational skills came to the fore, and he raised both the profile and international standing of the ABCB by creating links with his European counterparts.
He was still working hard in this job, walking the four miles each way to and from work, until he was sadly diagnosed with lung cancer.
It has been my privilege to have known Tim and to have been able to call him a friend — he will be sorely missed by all those who knew him.
Our heartfelt condolences go to his widow, Mary, and his family.
A memorial service will be held at St Nicholas Church, Chislehurst, Kent on Thursday 2 July at lorn.
