MANS TopUsed programme's Tony Bevan reveals: 'We're certainly seeing plenty of interest in more specialist ve'ides — 6x2 rigids with fridge bodies, for instance. So far as eight-wheel tippers are concerned, though, there are pockets of demand around the country and there's an export market, too.
"Customers are after 7.5-tonne tippers as well, despite the slump in the building trade," he adds. "Refrigerated 7.5-tonners remain popular, although many purchasers want 10to 12-tonne fridges instead, in order to get a better payload.
Buyers are also on the hunt for 18-tonne curtarnsiders. Bevan states. "There's lots of interest in late-registered examples in particular."
However, not everybody wants their 18-tonners to have sleeper cabs and big engines. Both add weight, and at 18 tonnes that can be critical.
Bevan doubts if hauliers are opting for low-powered feet-specification, so-called "guv'nors wagons" because, in a climate of relatively high unemployment, they feel there is less need to try to keep drivers happy. Even if they were, odds are that they would be disappointed, he suggests.
He recalls: "Go back three years and on the new side of things, everybody was pushing highhorsepower big-cab units. As a result, that's what's coming onto the used market now; and those units are attractively priced."
