COMPANIES CAN SAVE a minimum of £3,000 by making 10 meetings that staff would normally physically travel to virtual', says not-for-profit organisation Work Wise UK, Using telephones, webcams, video, or even the virtual world, Second Life, which is a programme accessible via the internet, where users can interact with others in a completely virtual environment, can save the UK economy up to £14bn a year, plus make staff more productive, adds Work Wise. It is challenging UK industry to look hard at which internal and customer meetings can be handled effectively without face-to-face contact, since the cost of travel alone for the average off-site meeting is £298.
Companies can also cut their carbon footprint and pass savings onto customers. A spokesperson for Work Wise says: "It is not just the traveling that costs money, but the opportunity cost of being out of the office for extended periods," See www.workwiseuk.org for more information,
