The waste management and recycling industry gathered at London's ExCeL centre for the inaugural Futuresource event. CM brings you the highlights.
Words: Ian Tonkin / Gratiduiirr This year ushered in a new era for the waste management and recycling sector, with the launch of the first Futuresource expo. Formally known as the Chartered Institute for Waste Management (CIWM) exhibition, Futuresource (pronounced Future Resource) is billed as "Europe's sustainability event" and showcases the latest developments and trends taking place within this sector of the market.
Mike Connolly, business development manager for Avery Weigh-Tronix, says: "There's no doubt business has been tough and still continues to be. However, signs of a turnaround are encouraging with more enquiries filtering through in the past few months."
Jeff Stock, managing director of Stocks UK Sweepers, expresses a similar view: "At the start of 2008, our order book was filled up 15 months in advance, but now it's around two to three months. Customers are slightly cautious about purchasing new sweepers, but our reconditioned and remounted models have gained in popularity since the market took a dive."
