is in dispute with ERF over an aluminium-wheeled tipper that has shed at least 38 wheel studs over the past three years. The M-registered 8x4 32-tanner, belonging to haulier AJ Champion, lost its first studs 13 months after it was bought. The studs were replaced under warranty but the problem recurred two years later, since when the studs have been breaking regularly. So far ERF has replaced all the studs at least twice; one of the hubs has been replaced at the same time as another complete stud overhaul. But the problem remains. AJ Champion's Cynthia Champion claims the studs are checked regularly with a torque wrench—ERF has changed its setting since the [problem started—and the company has had no similar problems during 30 years in the business. "We've lost around £4,000 with the truck being off the road," she says. "ERF has said they will take the truck in again but it will mean losing around £250 a day unless they supply a demo vehicle." Champion has asked ERF why it does not fit new wheels. Until now the company has blamed the problem on incorrect torque levels, but it says new wheels may be the next step. As far as compensation goes, a spokesman said ERF would look at the costs once the cause of the problem has been found. As CM went to press two more studs had been lost off one wheel—ERF is looking at the vehicle and has suggested a replacement.
