Which of the following most accurately describes the problem?

• At the same time as Leyland Daf gave 21,463 to the Institute of Road Transport Engineers for research into wheel fixing failures, Ford has recalled 15,000 LWB Transits to have their wheel fixings checked.

Leyland Daf made the donation because of an undertaking at the 1986 IRTE conference to donate a penny for every wheel nut (for all makes) sold by Multipart.

Ford has found that the 12 nuts that hold the twin rear wheels to the hub can come lose, allowing the inner wheel rim to losen and damage the outer wheel. To enable the nuts to retain the correct torque, Ford dealers will fit locating cones between the inner wheel and the hubs, and replace any damaged compo nents, free of charge.

Misalignment of studs and holes have been highlighted by the IRTE as one reason for the failure of wheel fastenings. Although the Department of Transport denies that there is a problem, a research programme funded jointly by the IRTE and the Department of Trade and Industry will lead to a new British Standard for wheel fixings.
