Which of the following most accurately describes the problem?

• Fiat's continuously variable transmission in the just launched Uno Selecta, has nothing in common with either the manual or automatic gearbox. Its heart is a continuous variator which consists of a drive pulley, a driven pulley and a steel transmission belt connecting the pulleys.

The CVT system offers an infinite number of ratios so that the engine is always in the right gear. The steel transmission belt has 300 trapezoidal blocks guided by two flexible strips each made of 10 concentric 0.18mm thick rings made of Maragin (martensitic) steel, a new material developed for the space industry as rocket cladding.

Fuel economy with the CVT is claimed up to 7% better than automatic transmission. There are no plans at present for it to be developed for vans.
