• Red Fox, the international freight forwarding company launched by DHL on 5 May, has announced that its fleet will consist of two Scalia 92M tractor units with two 12m curtain-sided trailers and a dozen Mercedes-Benz 709D panel vans. The new vehicles are being acquired on a leasing agreement.
This is Red Fox's first major vehicle acquisition and the units will all be liveried with the firm's striking fox-head logo.
According to general manager Jim Naylor, Red Fox will be able to use vehicles from Elan International's fleet. Elan is a sister company within the DHL group, specialising in overnight parcel deliveries. "If advantages in time and cost can be gained," says Naylor, "Elan allows us to utilise its road and air network throughout Europe."
Elan has spent the past 12 months improving and expanding its French network, mainly by re-locating its inhouse customs facilities from Le Bourget to Lille. All of the company's French customs clearance procedures are now carried out at Lille and the unit runs on a 24-hour basis. According to Pierre Lagarde, Elan's general manager in France, the company is now clearing consignments throughout the night.
Elan has also upgraded its trunking links between the Benelux countries and France with incoming units arriving at Lille earlier to meet flights arriving from the UK. As a result Elan claims that it has the quickest overnight delivery times from the UK to Paris and the surrounding region.
Lagarde says that Elan is now concentrating on the southern half of France, with a view to improving its schedules and delivery times there.
Connect launch delayed D Fledgling parcels carrier Connect UK has revised its launch date to 17 August, from 6 July, and has warned that some of the hauliers who have expressed an interest in operating a parcels franchise for the company will be disappointed. The delay has been caused by difficulties in identifying commercially viable areas for parcels franchises, says the company. After much work, it has been decided to limit the national network to 300 operating areas, instead of the planned 430.
