Which of the following most accurately describes the problem?

DAF TRUCKS plans to spend £15.5m on product development and has every intention of remaining an independent company.

Aart van der Padt, the company's president, said this on Tuesday when the company's British truck and bus centre was opened at Colchester, Essex (see page 57) He said the recent sale of International Harvester's share in the company to a Dutch consortium, of which Daf is part, was the start of a move towards more independence and autonomy for Daf which, he stressed, would not become involved in any major point ventures with other manufacturers.

Mr van der Padt accepted that there is some scope for cooperation on components, but not on units like engines, and there are contingency plans for the development of new engines.

The company is prepared to sell its stake in the GDD consortium to another company, even another vehicle manufacturer, but there is no question of any amalgamation in the immediate future.
