SENTIMENT and tradition have had to give way to expediency and economics on the Romney, Hythe and Dymchurch Railway, which enthusiasts built more than 50 years ago as a narrowgauge track for steam locomotives. Steam has been usurped by diesel power.
Over 200 children travel daily to school by the railway and the load is more than the steam locomotives could conveniently and economically handle. The problem has been solved by a Perkins 6.3544 diesel engine in a specially built traction unit.
THE FODEN Motor Works Band, reprieved through the generosity of the late Carton Tickell, who died 10 days after securing its future, is to play in the forecourt of Buckingham Palace on July 3. Will it become known as Foden's Royal Regiment of Toot?
