BRITISH international hauliers should benefit from some of the multi-million pound developments now in progress at the Belgian port of Zeebrugge.
A high-powered delegation of almost 100 people, including the junior Trade Minister in the Belgian Government, came to Dover to give details of these improvements last week.
A new inner harbour is now being excavated between the existing outer dam and a new dam further to the west. New ro/ro berths will be located here. The first, for North Sea Ferries daily service to Hull, should be operational by the end of next year. The second, for Townsend Thoresen, will be a double-deck berth, to accelerate the loading and unloading of twin-deck ships, and will have double lane ramps. This should be operational in 1985.
Zeebrugge Port Authority president F. Traen also revealed that the port's most frequent ro/ro service, the Townsend Thoresen link with Dover which started in 1964, would celebrateits 100,000th sailing on August 23 this year.
