Which of the following most accurately describes the problem?

on LT bus 'error/ LONDON Transport's failure to realise that its AEC Merlin buses were too long for the roads they used—with the result that the fleet is being withdrawn—was criticised in the Commons last week.

Who made the error, asked Mr Ivor Stanbrook (Tory, Orpington). The fleet had been purchased in the late 1960s and the roads in London had not changed much. One would have thought that those responsible would have calculated that a 36ft bus would be difficult to drive round certain junctions.

Mr Stanbrook was doubtful too about the usefulness of one-man 'buses. One sometimes got the impression that the time wasted in giving change for fares almost equalled any savings made by reducing manpower, he said.

His questions received no reply there and then.

But Mr Ernest Perry (Labour, Battersea South), who introduced the Bill, said he was sure the points would be answered by London Transport, he hoped very soon.
