Why is ethylene glycol-based anti-freeze better than a methanol-based one? According to Smiths Industries, who produce Bluecol, it is because: Methanol evaporates quickly, leaving a weaker mixture, and it costs much more.
Smiths say that international hauliers have more breakdowns through lack of anti-freeze than anything else. Even those who swelter in the heat of the Middle East can find themselves freezing in the Middle East night.
I learned all this last week stuck to a vinyl seat in a London conference room with the temperature in the 70s.
It seemed an odd time to be talking about anti-freeze.
