• Bridges built on the steel box girder principle are to have one lane on each carriageway Closed as a result of advice given by a technical committee, under Dr Alec Merrison, to Mr Peter Walker, Secretary of State for the Environment. There are 42 bridges of this type already in use and all will be subject to the restrictions.. Although many of the bridges have been carrying heavy traffic for some time and it is considered that the risk of post-construction defect is very slight, it has nevertheless been decided to restrict the traffic loading on them until a reappraisal of the design of each has been completed. the reappraisals are expected to take some weeks.
