East Midland Licensing Authority Takes Lenient View of Applications for Special A Licences : Big Fleets being Built Up

OPERATORS who are anxious about changing the bases of vehicles bought from the British Transport Commission may take courage from certain decisions of the East Midland Licensing Authority, although it is not certain that another Licensing Authority would take a similar view of the applications.

In the East Midlands, a haulier has been allowed to transfer vehicles from Bermondsey (London) and Bourne, mouth to Ashby-de-la-Zouch and another operator, based at Leighton Buzzard, has acquired a unit at Brentford, Middx. The distance from Bournemouth to Ashby-de-la-Zouch in a straight line is about 150 miles.

A tendency noticeable this week is towards the formation of large fleets of vehicles under special A licences. Some operators have been successful with a number of tenders. Twenty-three vehicles have now been purchased from the B.T.C. by Hill's Transport (Dinas Powis), Ltd., and other hauliers have acquired even larger fleets. They will be in a strong position to compete with the buyers of the larger units of 50 or more vehicles when these are placed on

the market. • SCOTLAND Eleven more vehicles (411 tons) have been taken over by Pentland Garage, Ltd., Loanhead, since The Commercial Motor reported on March 19 that they had bought two vehicles.
