FtfRTHER reports of varying fortunes on the part of municipalities are to hand, and below we publish results received from the following

towns:—

EXETER.

A net profit for the year of £4,141 is announced by the Exeter transport undertaking. In his report Mr. W. Y. Smith-Saville states that, during 1937-38, a number of buses is in be replaced by oil-engined double-deckers. During the past year seven oilers were in use and ran 240,459 tulles at a fuel cost of 11,464.

Mr. Smith-Saville states that the oilers have not been found to cost more in maintenance than petrol-engined machines, whilst had the whole fleet been oil-engined, the saving in fuel alone would have amounted to approximately £6,900 for the year. Twelve more oilers are on order, and the effect of these will be evident in next year s accounts.

LEICESTER.

'Leicester Corporation transport Unflertakinfi made a profit, last year. of £13,713, compared with £18,156 in 1955. Whilst the buses worked at a reduced profit, the tramcars incurred a lose of £2,511. The balance—£13,848 —is to be devoted to bus renewals, leaving St net surplus of £4,614.

ACCRINGTON.

The results of the Accrington transport undertaking for the year ended March 31 last represent the most successful year since the change-over from trams to buses. Allowing for sinking funds and interest charges (£7,735)

sod a grant of .854 for depot extensions, a net surplus of £9,420 remains. The gross revenue during the year amounted to £75,800, whilst expenditure totalled £56,699.

IPSWICH.

The transport corannittee reports a surplus of £3,551 on the trolleybuses and a deficit of £3,446 on the tramways for the year.

MULL.

A net surplus of £14.420—the first credit balance for seven years—is revealed in the annual report of the Hull transport undertake Mg. The profit comes after an aggrate loss during the past seven years of £74,000, and is a tribute to the reorganization of the undertaking started two years ago and now nearing completion.

Whilst revenue hat Increased by £21,000 during the past two years, operating costs have been reduced by £24,000. Other interesting items in the report are Working cost per mile for buses 10.79d.; for trams 11.47d.; total mileage last year 7,255,510 compared with 7,305,536 in the previous year. The rolling stock to date consists of 115 tramcars, 109 petrol buses and 23 oil-engined

buses. Fifteen oil buses and 26 trolleybuses are on order,

LEEDS.

Leeds Transport Department has shown a net profit of £29,804, for the year ended March Si let.. An Increase it reported in the total receipts which amounted to £1,194,711as against 41,152,122 a year earlier. Working expenses totalled £900 318, compared with £857,675, for the previous year. whilst the number of passengers carried increased by 5,712,196 to 185,972,065.
