BIG A.R.O. MEETINGS FOR YORKSHIRE.

The demand for reforms in roadtransport legislation, which was vigorously put forward at the recent mass meeting in Leeds convened by the Yorkshire area of A.R.O., will be heard again at two further mass meetings which are being arranged under the same auspices—one in East Yorkshire and one in South Yorkshire. The East Yorkshire meeting will be held on July 6, at the Grosvenor Hotel, Hull, at 7.30 p.m., when' the speakers will he Major the Hon. Eric Long, political adviser to A.R.O., and Mr. R. W. Sewill, national director. Mr. J, A. M. Bright, chairman of the Yorkshire area, will preside.

• The South Yorkshire meeting will be held on July 7, at the Y.M.C.A:: Fargate, Sheffield, at 7.30 p.m., when the speakers will be Mr. Sewill and Mr. Bright.

S.T.R. at Gloucester Next Week.

Operators in the Gloucester area should not miss the opportunity of bearing S.T.R.. The Commercial Motor costs expert, lecture on the subject of costs and charges, next Etiday. He will speak at a meeting held under the auspices of the r.Gloucester Sub-area of A.R.O., at 7.30 p.m., at the Spreadeagle Hotel, Gloucester, on July 2.

C.M.U.A. Forms Rhyl Branch.

Following a campaign in the district by Mr. J. E. Preece, Liverpool and N. Wales Division organizer, a C.M.T.T.A. Rhyl and District branch has been formed. Mr. R. E. Jones has been elected chairman, and Mr. F. W. B. Simmons is to act as secretary.

So far Only two members have been fleeted to the committee. They are Mr. T: Bayliss and Mr: J. Parkinson.

Minister to Visit Scotland.

The National Council of the Scottish Commercial Motor Users Association is to entertain the Minister of Transport -to luncheon at the Station Hotel, Edinburgh, on Tuesday next. This will be the Minister's first official visit to Seotland, and a number of Government officials, Members of Parliament and others have been invited to welcome him.

Police Methods Criticized.

At an informal meeting of the A.R.O. Stoke Area Committee, held on Monday, considerable apprehension was expressed at the interpretation by certain Licensing Authorities of the words " continuous and wilful" in reference to breaches of the Road Traffic Act.

Difficulties facing hauliers, whose drivers were prosecuted for exceeding the speed limit, were pointed out, and it was said that it is sometimes impossible for an employer to discover a conviction against a driver if the latter elected to pay the fine himself.

Criticism of police methods in certain districts was also expressed, and the practice of following lorries for several miles and then instituting proceedings , for alleged speeds only slightly in

excess of the limit was deprecated. Such methods make it practically iipossible for a correct check to be made on the vehicle's speed. Moreover, operators' licences were endangered by such police methods.

B.R.F. Annual Meeting.

The annual general meeting of the British Road Federation is to be held on June 28, at the Society of Motor Manufacturers and Traders, 83, Pall Mall, London, S.W.1.

The meeting will elect the new members of the council. AN A.R.O. MILK TRANSPORT SCHEME?

Discussions have taken place, The Commercial Motor understands, between Mr. R. W. Sewill, national director of A.R.O., and officials of the Milk Marketing Board. The interviews have taken place at the request of the Board's officials, and it is believed that A.R.O. is to prepare a scheme for milk transport similar to that recently devised for beet haulage.

C.M.U.A. Sub-offices Prove Popular.

Opening of C.M.U.A. branch offices at Warrington and Wrexham has met with a lively response from local operators. Warrington office is open on Tuesdays and Wrexham on Wednes• days, both from 2 p.m. to 7 p.m.

In view of the widespread nature of the Liverpool and 'North Wales Division, it has been decided to bring members together from time to time. The first meeting for this purpose will be; a rally, which is to be held in Liverpool in October next, and in the early part of 1938 there is to be a divisional dinner.

B.R.F. Circulates Roads Information.

A reprint of an illustrated supplement from a recent issue of The Architectural Review, containing photographs and designs of the latest methods of road construction, is to be circulated by the B.R.F.

The reprints will be sent to Members of both Houses of Parliament, the chairmen of highways committees, local government surveyors, etc. The B.R.F. plans to send out 20,000 copies.
