CLEANSING officials from all parts of the country braved the elements on Thursday of last week to witness the annual exhibition and demonstration of cleansing vehicles, held in connection with the Conference of the Institute of Public Cleansing, which closed at Margate on June 18. Our representative who visited the demonstration found that, despite the cold day with heavy showers, members of the Institute kept manufacturers' repre
sentatives busy answering inquiries regarding their latest products.
Manufacturers responded well to the invitation to attend, and a representative array of appliances of all Rinds was
open to inspection. The exhibits were reviewed in our issue dated June 11. Decontaminating equipment was well to the fore, and a number of refuse collectors and street washers was seen to be provided with apparatus for combating the effects of gas. Amongst the machines so equipped we noted an S.D. Freighter, a,round which many people listened with interest to the dissertations of Mr. C. IC. :Edwards.
Mr. Edwards explained to us that the decontaminating apparatus has been designed so that it may be used with any existing S.D. refuse collector. The equipment is on rollers and may be quickly placed into, the collector through the rear door. It comprises a 400-gallon water tank and conipart-' nients for chloride of lime and sand. A tank is• included for mixing the • Chloride wash, and an auxiliary fire pump is provided. Four lockers are hooked on to the sides of the vehicle
• and these Are intended for clothing,. tools, or containinated gear.
Some Good Examples of Gas Decontamination. • .
Other examples of machines equipped for gas decontamination included a Thornycroft 800-gallon gully-emptier, which incorporated Eagle equipment, and the well-known Scammell 1,250. gallon street washer. The latter is capable of providing a fan-tail of water; which completely surrounds the vehicle, thus making it possible to disinfect an area 70 ft. wide by 35 ft. high.
A. Karrier C.K5 1,000-gallon gullyemptier, built for Middlesbrough, incorporated Yorkshire equipment and was provided with auxiliary sprays for gas-decontamination purposes.
On the Dennis 700-gallon gullyemptier two special ring jets, fed from the same Pump, are provided on top of the cab, whilst water can also be led through 25 ft. of delivery hose to either a portable ring jet or a normal jet. Moving floors were well represented amongst the many types of refuse collector, and we saw several examples of the Principality floor, notably on the Garner rear-loading refuse collector, which had as its basis the 3-ton chassis. Incidentally, this machine bore evidence of the trend toWards streamlining utility machines.
The Eagle concern demonstrated its moving-floor in connection with a refuse vehicle based on a MorrisCommercial chassis, whilst several examples of•the Compressmore collector were to be seen on Dennis and Thornycroft chassis.
Another popular moving floor-7---the Transport—was used in a Transport allsteel rear-loading collector, based on a Dennis six-wheeled chassis. Also a Transport product, was a neat all-steel 10-cubic-yd. collector on a Fordson chassis. • The Dennis concern demonstrated a 10-cubic-yd. machine with a moving floor of its own Make.
Onlookers were much impressed with the Electricar-Eagle 18-cuhic,:yd. collector,-which has been ordered by Westminster. This go-ahead. council has been responsible for pioneering the electric mechanical horse, had this was,' we believe,"the first occasion on which its merits 'have,: been demonstrated in public. Its silence and smoothness. gained the full approbation of cleans jog officers.
Features of the New Pagefield Paragon . Collector.
Walker Brothers (Wigan), Ltd., demonstrated the newParagon collector, in which the body. comprises four• telescopic: seclionS which can be.
tended contracted through a reduetion gear driven by the engine..
A Useful device, adaptable in par: ticular to the-Pagefield • Paragon machine; is the W.D. Anti--dust SeaL a: product of the Woodalli.Thicktiani Vertical Retort and OVeri-COnstrnetion". Co: (1920), Ltd.; 186450, Victoria' Street, London; S.W.1. A model of this apparatus was on view at Margate, and it comprises a hopper of new design, which enables a machine to unload the refuse within a sealed compartment. A counter-weighted hinged door is provided for the hopper enclosure, whilst a self-adjusting sealing frame is designed to fit tightly around the vehicle while unloading is in progress.
A Handy New Karrier Street. sweeping Appliance.
A new machine which evoked interest was the Karrier Bantam street-sweeper. Water is delivered to a front sprinkler pipe, dampening the road prior to sweeping. The appliance has a sweeping speed of 7 mph.
An A.E.C. Monarch chassis formed the basis of the Ideal refuse collector, which, as will be remembered, relies for its Compression of the refuse upon the rotation of the body. It is possible, as was shown at the demonstration, to compress the refuse when the vehicle is on the move.
, The Bedford . range of municipal vehicles was represented by two rearloading collectors of straightforward design.
A feature We noticed on the Vulcan 10-cubic-yd.barriet-type ;body was the Principality moving flOor, incorporating
a remote control. • •
, Several bin-carrying machineS were to be seen.. The Well-known Scammell Outfit performed . its usual" evolutions with consimmate ease, whilst the Page
field device for-' dealing• large buildings Was a centre of inter-est.
Dennis Company Introduces New litin-carrier„ .
A new niachine was the Dennis bin-carrier, on which arc. carried: three.
li-cubic-yd: containers. feature of, this vehicle is the special truck, accomL modated on 4he steel superstructure,. which enables the bins easily • to be moved by hand from the vehicle to the: building. A simple hoisting.geanrnakes for easy manipulation of the bins.
• This annual demonstration is, perhaps, -one of the Most valuable features of the Cleansing Conference and, on this ocCasion, as alwayS, it was marked by the introduction of neW machines designed further to facilitate the efficient execution of essential public services..''
