induction pipes and said to give economy and improved engine performance by assisting vaporization of the petrol and distribution of the mixture have, in the past, been viewed -with some scepticism. When, for test purposes, we recently fitted in one of Tile Commercial Motor staff cars a device of this nature, we admit that we shared this view. Now, however, our doubts c,o4cerning the authenticity of the claims made for it have, been dispelled.
Immediately . upon starting the engine (a Wolseley 12 h.p unit -•:with SaLT. carbnretter), after fixing in position the -distribution rectifier,as the device is called by its maker, VOkes; Ltd.; 95-105,Lower Richmond .Road,-, London, "S.W.15, we observed a ehangein its running: The exhaust • note vs aSTpercef3tiblY different and a slight torsional -vibration,• forfferly -detectable, was reduced.
Upon taking the -car riri the road, we found that the period, follOwing a start from cold, during which the enriching control needed to be kept in use was markedly shortened and a farhiliar flat spot was almost eliminated. Without any adjustment of the carburetter, an advance in the rate of consumption from 33 .m.p.g. to 35 m.p.g. was made, whilst a subsequent trial with a weaker setting gave a return Of 36 m.p.g., under every-day running conditions.
The rectifier is available in sizes suitable for inductionpipe bores from 22 mm. to 48 mm. and costing from 7s. 6d. to 17s. 6d.
The improvements effected by the rectifier may be partly attributed to its influence in .correcting the bias imparted to the ga's flow by the throttle valve. From this, presumably, it takes its name. Set obliquely in the passage, the valve naturally deflects the vapour from, a straight course, but, being composed of parallel cells arranged in line, axially, with the pipe, the rectifier corrects this tendency. In addition, it promotes atomization.
