Which of the following most accurately describes the problem?

At a sitting of the Northern Scotland Licensing Authority at Inverness, last Friday, a Sutherland man refused a haulier's licence when it was offered to him • by Mr. Henry Riches. He was Alexander David Allison, Tomich, Lairg, who applied for a licence to run' a lorry within the area of Melvich in the north, lillapool in the west and Lairg in the East.

Mr. Riches intimated that no case had been made out for the granting of a licence within the general radius. There Was, however, sorriething to be said for a service between Lairg and Ullapool and Lairg and Lochinver, as both destinations were not served by a haulier. He was, therefore, prepared to grant a licence for a service between these two points.

Mr. J. Mitchell, for applicant, said his client had considered the suggestion, but found it unsuitable. Mr. Riches then intimated that the application was refused.

Objections to the application were made by the Southern Transport and Trading Co., and the L.M.S. Railway. The latter, however, did not press its Objections when amendments were Made to the original application.

Ferguson Tractor Development.

The interests of David Brown Tractors, Ltd., and Harry Ferguson, Ltd., have been combined, and a new company is, we learn, about to be formed with a capital of £100,000. The joint managing directors will he Mr. David Brown, who is managing director of David Brown and Sons (Huddersfield), Ltd., and Mr. Harry Ferguson, the inventor of the Fergusonfarm machine. The new arrangement will enable Mr. Ferguson to concentrate on technical developments, whilst Mr. Brown will be responsible for all commercial matters, including sales and production.

Fuels Congress in September.

The committee of the. Carbon Carburant has chosen Rome for its third Tnternational Congress, which will be held from September 10-12. During the proceedings many important questions of a technical and economic nature will be discussed, 'particularly the utilization of solid, liquid and gaseous subsidiaries of petrol. The Congress is organized by the Consiglio Nazionale delle Ricerche, and all information regarding it may be obtained from the General Secretarial Office, care of Istituto di Chimica della R. Universita, Via Parnisperna 89, Rome.

Glasgow‘ Bridge Scheme Held Up.

Glasgow Corporation's committee on cross-river communication agreed on June 16 to ask the three contractors who have submitted tenders for the erection of Finnieston Bridge to allow their offers to stand for a further two months, pending the result of the appeal to the Ministry of Transport Over the Fine Art Commissions objection of the designs.
