ASURPRISING number of Fords converted to the sixwheeler principle has already been placed on the market, but until now' we have not seen one of British make which embodies four-wheel drive. This, however, is -the principle adopted in the construction of the Sussex six-wheeler built by County Commercial Cars, Abbey House, Westminster, London, SAVA. It enables a Ford vehicle to be converted to carry 4oad of 3 tons, and yet the chassis weight is only 1 ton 8 ewt., so -that it is possible for the complete vehicle to weigh under 2 tons and so come within the £25 licensing category. The list price of the attachment for making the conversion, including 6-in. tyres all round, is £165, and the complete chassis works out at 1265,. or £15 extra with the dual gearbox. Provisional protection has already been obtained for several of the features of the new arrangement.
In addition to this model -the company is shortly putting on the market a six-wheeled chassis with six-wheel brakes and a dead trailing axle instead of a driven one, the chassis tieing designed to carry a load not exceeding 2i tons. The price of the conversion unit, which is to be known as the Surrey, will be £88, and that of the complete chassis £278.
We give an illustration of the Sussex vehicle.. This sixwheeler can be equipped with either low or high gear as may be required. The low-geared model is recommended for crosscountry work and service in .hilly districts, and it can be specially adapted for towing electric-cable floats, etc. The machine is braked on all six wheels, and it is claimed that it will run 13 miles to the gallon of fuel. We understand that the company is prepared to give demonstrations and that Ford dealers throughout the country will -soon be receiving complete catalogues of these two vehicles, together with details of selling discounts, earliest delivery dates, etc.
