CONTAINER WAY and Roadferry Ltd plans to cut its haulage fleet ib up to one third by the end of next month, and it is rationalising ff Irish Sea ferry services.

The Preston-based company, which forms part of National Freight Company's Special Traffics Group, has notified trades unions that it wants to reduce its 35-vehicle lorry fleet, which is based at Heysham, to 12 or 15 vehicles, and to transfer more work on to outside haulage companies' vehicles.

A company spokesman told CM that, at present, between 60 and 70 per cent of the road traffic went by outside haulage companies' vehicles.
