Which of the following most accurately describes the problem?

A SPOT welder which can be used IA either as a portable gun or as a pedestal machine has recently been introduced by Thou P. Headland, Ltd., 141, Lower Marsh, London, S.E.I. The Power-in-Hand welder, as it is called, possesses the desirable feature of an electronic timer which gives control of welding time in 24 steps from 3/50th second to 5 seconds.

The welding head, which weighs 13 lb.. exerts a pressure at the electrodes of 160 lb.; the follow-through switching is incorporated in the hand lever, which has a well-balanced action. Electrodes and electrode arms are made of standard-diameter copper bar, interchanging and adjustment being made through socket screws.

Two models are being made. The standard machine is for use with 400volt single-phase 50-cycle A.C. mains supplies, and the universal welder covering voltages of 200, 220, 230 and 250, or 380, 400 and 440. The changeover is effected by interchanging links to the transformer primary.

Built into the equipment is a capaci tator for power factor correction. It -reduces the nominal rating to ,10kVA ,and . gives a correction factor to 0.9, with consequent balanced load on the mains. The capacity of the equipment covers any thickness of mild steel up to two by or IR-gauge.material to a meniber with the normal throat depth of 12 ins.

A number of ingenious accessories has been produced to enable normally awkward jobs to be done as conveniently as a straightforward 'weld. These attachments include an anvil for use where it is impossible to employ the normally mounted electrodes, and a claw fitting which will be. found particularly useful when welds have to be made in places where room for manipulating is restricted.

The machine is not intended to be used in its pedestal form for long production runs, although it can be employed in this way if water-cooled arms, which are available, be fitted in place of the standard ones.

Prices are as follows: Standard equipment. £136; Universal model, £146.
