Which of the following most accurately describes the problem?

When M-B launched the Atego it was said to be the most advanced truck in its class. That's arguable. But the dogged reliability, driver comfort, residuals and image aren't.

n March 1998 Mercedes-Benz introduced the Atego as the most advanced light and middleweight truck range in the world. A proud boast, but it was backed up with a wide choice of spedfications incorporating a number of innovations. The range extends from 7.5 to 28 tonnes, as rigids and attics, with four cab options and three engines.

The 7.5-tonner is aimed at short to medium-distance urban delivery operations. The four-pot, 425-litre, OM9o4 LA is the standard power option at 7.5, 9.5, 10.5, 12.0 and 13.5 tonnes, rated at 152hp or 17ohp. A 231hp 0M906, 6.37-litre straight six is specified for the 15-tormer; rated at up to 28ohp this engine also powers the 18-tonne 4x2 rigid and a 28-tonne 4x2 tractive unit.

The four-cylinder engine needed a big step up in power to compete with the previously specified six-pot units, but it cuts about 90kg from the weight of the 7.5-tonner, where every kilo of payload counts.

All Atego engines have three valves per cylinder with electronic engine management and unit injectors operating at 1,6 oobar. Mercedes-Benz's constant-throttle engine brake comes as an option. The 152hp version, uprating the base 7.5-tonner to an 815, generates 12% more power and torque than was provided for previous models, but it still runs quietly enough to avoid the need for engine encapsulation. Cab insulation is excellent though there is a turbo whine at high engine speeds.

A five-speed ZF synchromesh gearbox is matched to the torque of the 815; MercedesBenz's own C6o six-speed box, with a lower first-gear ratio, is specified for the 817. It might seem more logical the other way round but the six-speeder costs more and the 817 is the higher spec vehicle. In any case, the overall gearing is fine on the 815.

Uniquely at this weight, full air ventilated disc brakes come as standard. ABS anti-lock braking is regulated by Mercedes-Benz's Telligent control system, only seen before on the heavier Actros models. Proven parabolic
