by Miles Brignall • Drivers working for Leeds. based A One Transport, who have not had a wages increase since 1991, are voting this week whether to strike for a pay rise.
More than 60 drivers at the firm's Bradford, Glasgow and Leeds depots are voting in a secret ballot on industrial action, arguing that they have not had a pay increase since a 2% deal, back in 1991.
Transport & General Workers Union negotiator Maurice Britton says a 5% offer was made at the start of talks. A One's chairman Neil Magee then reportedly decided the company could not afford an increase and withdrew the offer. Britton says Magee now refuses to meet him. Drivers on international work are believed to have turned down an offer of 4%, to show solidarity with the firm's domestic drivers.
Magee has told the drivers, many of whom have worked for the firm for as long as 20 years and are reported to be very upset, that anyone taking strike action will be sacked. Magee was unavailable for comment.
