ur Lady's Hospital for Sick Children in Crumlin, near Dublin, is better off to the tune of £106,000 following the raffle of a Scania tractor unit by the Irish Road Haulage Association. Tickets went on sale at £50 each and, in many workplaces, drivers clubbed together to buy a chance at winning their own truck. In the event, the whiner was Tractor Motors of County Cavan. The cheque was presented to the Children's Hospital by IRHA president Jimmy Quinn: "Haulage companies in Ireland in the main are small family businesses and illnesses that threaten young children strike a chord with most of us," he told Celine O'Regan, representing the hospital.
At the presentation, the IRHA also launched its booklet, "Sharing the Road with Lorries and Buses," jointly produced with the AA, and aimed at promoting an improved appreciation of road safety. Quinn says that motorists and cyclists could benefit from spending a day in a truck cab to get a lorry driver's perspective of other traffic.
