• Silentnight, the Lancashirebased bed manufacturer, is reappraising its distribution operation after pulling out of its direct delivery service for Lowndes Queensway. The contract represented 7.5% of Silentnight's business and its loss led to 230 redundancies at its factories in Barnoldswick, Lancashire and Sutton in West Yorkshire. Christopher Burnett, Silentnight's chief executive, says no driver redundancies are expected but the company is reviewing its distribution operation. "We are seeking a balance of our three main forms of transport, which are our own drivers, owner-drivers and random hire; and we are currently at the negotiating stage,' he says.
