• Britain's road transport giants are a step closer to scooping several more major national newspaper distribution contracts, it was revealed this week.
As exclusively reported by Commercial Motor (14-20 January), British Rail is set to lose prize distribution deals with Associated Newspapers, Express and Telegraph newspapers and the Guardian, which together sell more than five million copies. Their publishers plan to move to road distribution and are courting major operators.
Richard Vardar, circulation manager of Telegraph group, says lots of hauliers are "jumping in" hoping to bid for its distribution, but the battle will really be between TNT and National Carriers, once the contract with British Rail runs out at the end of 1989.
